Maka dishes out a healthy dose of “Chocolate Love” [Video]

Last week must have been the most soul-draining period since the global pandemic started and with the spate of protests and civil unrest sparked by the killing of George Floyd. To no surprise, it has been pretty hard trying to stay positive. On the flip side, as cliched as it may sound, being positive and proactive might just be the way to stay afloat right now. Well, that bright and positive thing is right here, as Nigerian Afro-soul musician, Maka shares the cheerful video for her song “Chocolate Love.”  The track is her personal tribute to the term black love which is emphasized by the chocolate metaphor and all its delicious attributes. Backed by Jay Blakez‘s warm guitar licks, lush synths, and soft percussions, Maka delivers a message of love in all its purity. She truly lets it out on this one when she croons “..Every minute, my life I see you in it…”

For the visuals, she recruits emerging director Gbenga Sawyer who uses bright aesthetics to highlight the beauty, energy, and joy of being black and in love. The set pieces are vibrant, colorful, and give off a private house party feel as we get to see Maka and a bunch of her friends just having fun with each other’s company. The visual effects are not so crazy but sure add a cartoonish touch to the overall texture of the video. It’s simple, fun, and reminds us of good times as this was shot pre-corona virus. In a time where black pain is amplified more than ever, the visuals hope to be a source of escapism and pride.
