Nigerian singer/songwriter Simi closes out the year with her new single “So Bad” which sees her tap the talents of fellow Afropop singer Joeboy for a superb duet. The sultry record is a sensual piece that explores the concept of being drunk in love with someone, from having butterflies in the tummy to doing unexpected things. Simi sets the tone with her soft angelic vocal tone followed by Joeboy’s Jamaican-tinged melodies. In summary, “So Bad” captures the ever-expanding Afro-fusion style with its R&B sensibilities mixed with hypnotic textures and gripping drum grooves.
The Joeboy-assisted track comes with an Adasa Cookey-directed video which brings out the essence of the song. The visual is colorful, expressive, and vibrant as it captures Simi’s sensuality with a subtle approach. Cookey makes use of well-crafted color-coordinated set pieces for both Simi and Joeboy and the result is as engaging as they come. “So Bad” is a follow-up to Simi’s groundbreaking single titled “Woman,” and is the second single from her upcoming project slated for a Q1 2022 release.
Nigerian singer/songwriter Simi started her career as a chorister in the church and was briefly a Gospel artist when she released her debut LP Ogaju in 2008. She released two more solo LPs Simisola and Omo Charlie Champagne, Vol 1 in 2017 and 2019 respectively. Both projects garnered much praise from critics for her ever-evolving style that takes elements from Nigerian folk music, R&B, Afropop, Afrobeat, and to some extent hip-hop. She currently runs her own label Studio Brat and also produces/mixes some of her songs.
