Flipturn furthers their agenda of illuminant storytelling with the new double single, “Halfway” / “Brooklyn Baby.”
The independent, Floridian five-piece follows up their breezy single, “Playground”, with two city-inspired tracks alluding to fears in intimate relationships. “Halfway” evolves through an emotional journey. With heartfelt lyrics and a serene balance between different instrumentations, the song opens softly, gradually leading up to an outburst of passion, before coming down to a final reveal of vulnerability. It feels like an avoided conversation of commitment and honesty that finally exploded on a road trip to Houston. There’s something so undeniably sultry to the track, captivating and enabling at the same time. It is so much more than a simple set up for the other number, “Brooklyn Baby.”
“Brooklyn Baby” serves as the sonically brighter half. Possessing a similar sense of fake serenity, the track explores the fear of loneliness. “But I’m in need of someone more than I crave it,” lead singer Dillon Basse sings the truth felt by many metropolitans living in Brooklyn and cities alike. While both tracks unveil their progressions seamlessly, “Brooklyn Baby” spins into a full force vertigo in the best way possible. The bridge on the track functions as a rhythmic breathing point- and we certainly need it, as this track can feel so extravagant and breathlessly immense.
The double single certainly leaves plenty of space for imagination and expectation for the band’s debut LP, due later this year.
