There’s something very holy about BAYBE’s grungy and thrashing aesthetic and her new single, “DON’T HMU” continues the recent trajectory of her angrier punk sound.
Perhaps it’s her angelically sweet vocal against the loose-chain guitar solos, or it might be the more hip-hop, at time rap-based songwriting against the punk rock instrumentations, the constant bickering elements in her music provide pure thrills. “DON’T HMU” also takes liberty in breaking out of the traditional segmenting in pop music. BAYBE skillfully sews in rap verses, mosh inducing pre-chorus and an acoustic, solemn bridge that closes the track. Upon closer listen, she sneaks in plenty more moments of fun. From cheeky sound effects to ascending background vocal, “DON’T HMU” further solidifies BAYBE’s ability to define her own artistic style and direction.
“It ain’t enough to have you tell me I’m great / I got you taking the bait / I’ll have you screaming my name,” she sings as she ends the line with a literal scream of “BAYBE!” While there are a lot of sonic parallels “DON’T HMU” feels like the more defiant and confident version of the artist’s 2020 single, “MY NAME IS BAYBE.” One thing is certain: BAYBE comes to be the next punk-pop sweetheart and she has it planned out from the start.
