California duo THE BRÖTHEL, composed of members Camden Premo and JohnBorn, have released a new self-titled album. Often described as performance-based art, their fiery live shows have now morphed into a full-length album of epic proportions. According to JohnBørn, B.R.O.T.H.E.L. is an acronym for (Beautiful. Relationship. Occasionally. Transferring. His and Her. Energy with Love). JohnBorn hopes that the deeper meaning causes listeners to think one step further than their initial reaction when they are introduced to the group’s namesake and aesthetics. Connected through music but friends forever Camden Premo and JohnBørn share close birthdays and are connected musically as their influences are sonically from the same 80’s record vault. Their new record is an infectious, luscious project that keeps its sound refreshing while also retaining a charmingly retro appeal with its 80’s and early 90’s influences.
Their new album contains smooth, rich production that blends influences from pop, hip-hop, and R&B for an expansive, catchy release. Opener “Breath Away” contains atmospheric sonics that showcase the group’s sharp songwriting abilities, as they paint evocative pictures right from the get-go. Tracks like “Raw (Californiacation)” and “The Brothel Haus” bring in sounds from classic west coast hip-hop while remaining progressive, giving the song’s a memorable, lively bounce. “Love Juice (Strawberry Rain)” has a distinctly 80’s feel, with its luxurious, electro-leaning production and vivid vocals. Closer “Sides (Gemini)” provides a crescendo of lush instrumentation, sending the project off in a glorious fashion with raw, expansive guitars and glowing synths.
Regarding the collaboration between the two artists, Camden Premo says, “John is a paint picture kind of artist and I’m a Hip-Hop artist. I heard how dope his shit was and pushed him to go full force with it. I got a bunch of music too, so combined we are just ready to let all that shit go”.
The latest from California duo THE BRÖTHEL consisting of Camden Premo and JohnBorn, their new self-titled album provides an infectious, engaging set of songs that defies genres and sounds both retro and forward-thinking simultaneously.
