Antwerp-based DnB-fusion trio KRANKk, made up of producer Aram Abgaryan (keys), Thomas Geysen (drums) and Willem Heylen (guitar, electronics) made a splash with their acclaimed debut Dark and since then they have been pushing the envelope with subsequent releases. Blending their core love for DnB with UK Garage and a host of other genres, the trio continue to elevate as shown in their latest effort “Nova” which sees them collaborating with fellow DnB lover Selah Sue who provides a soul-piercing vocal performance.
The record is as cinematic as they come and starts off with a discordant synth lead alongside Selah’s rich vocal accompaniment before a gyrating synth bassline comes into play and the track rises to a plateau. Here, Selah dives deep into her core to find the strength to push on in these tumultuous times. Armed with her raw emotion-laden vocals, she sings “Hope when I do I feel alone/Break when we’re falling out of line./Breath when you’re doing things in life Ooh/When I need to judge you” over the ebb and flow pulses of the sonic canvas laid before her.
The birth of the track was a no-brainer as Selah adds “When I first heard KRANKk. I was immediately hooked; They brought me back to my first love in music: Dnb” and just like that “Nova” was written fairly quickly.
