Kelly Vargas is an LA-based, New York-raised artist with Costa Rican-American roots who started singing at a young age. Soaking up the classic tunes from the ’70s and ’80s from her parents and also informed by the popular music from the 90s, she started playing the guitar/piano and later became trained in classic and jazz music. With all the musical training and development at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, she ventured into the music business with a seasoned mindset and many hours of live performance experience behind her. Her latest effort titled “BFY” or “Bad For You” is a brilliant genre-bending track that brings together the sultriness of R&B, the heartfelt pace of soul, the brightness of pop and the undeniable groove of Afrobeats in one breath. The track sees her working with Haitian-American producer Prophete who crafts a lush and vibrant backdrop for her to deliver a stunning alluring performance that showcases her vocal range and relatable songwriting. Here, she explores the concept of female agency within a relationship and the dynamics of being able to make choices and decisions. Lines like “I can’t break free/Won’t you let me/Drown in my own desire” dig deep into her wants and needs.
