UK trio Dutch Criminal Record share their new surf-pop tune “00’s Nostalgia”. Dusted with breezy melodies and feelgood indie-pop, the single is the ultimate pool-side soundtrack.
With jangly guitar sequences and freeflowing beats, “00’s Nostalgia” does what it says on the tin. It’s nostalgic. Featuring dazzling synths and an underscoring bass pattern, the single sweeps you up amongst its fizzy infectious riffs to produce a highly addictive gem. Weighted in golden tones, “00’s Nostalgia” feels like a blast from the past yet with a sweet, juicy freshness that makes you feel like you’re discovering something new.
“00’s Nostalgia is a desperate cry of sentimentality in the face of existential dread, it’s something everyone has experienced at one point in their lives,” explains Joe Delaney-Stone.
“I wrote it in deep lockdown around late April when the novelty of being cooped up had well and truly worn off. It had been unreasonably hot for April and as I slowly cooked in my barely ventilated North London flat I was noodling on my guitar and the intro riff just appeared on my fingers. As I came to write the lyrics on an old memory on social media catapulted me back to my early teens when the existential threat of global events seemed like something that just happened in the news and not something that would ever affect me. I tried to reflect on that and the effect that comparing myself to others on social media during lockdown had on me and probably countless others.”
A sparkly piece of expertly executed indie-pop, “00’s Nostalgia” is equipped to make the sun shine on any dreary day. Plus with albums from the likes of Friendly Fires, Vampire Weekend and Foals released that year, it’s no wonder Dutch Criminal Record want to go back to 2008.
