B-ahwe reflects on isolation in poignant new single, "Circles"

B-ahwe continues to establish herself as a truly unique musical entity. The British singer (pronounced “Bee-ah-wee”) has gained a reputation for her mesmerizing vocal style, thoughtful lyrical themes, and genre-bending music, all of which are on full display on her latest single, “Circles.” With appropriately hypnotic production from TAMBALA, the track is a preview of her forthcoming EP, Motions, which is set for release September 17.

While the worst of the global pandemic is hopefully behind us, the effects of extended time in isolation will likely continue into the future, and “Circles” finds B-ahwe reflecting on the overabundance of introspection that has taken place during the past two years. She uses the theme of changing seasons to explore issues of mental health during these adverse times. In one of the more salient lines, she writes, “Time traveling through old wounds / winter got me curving cold blues / When the clocks go back and the dark descends / New year but I’m living in the past few.”

While B-ahwe’s airy yet purposeful voice commands the listener’s attention throughout, her immensely skilled supporting team of musicians plays an integral role in bringing her message to life. TAMBALA’s production offers a beautiful balance of dreamy soundscapes with rhythmic flourishes, and the instrumentalists bring additional nuance and style to the song. “Circles” is a welcome reminder of B-ahwe’s vocal talents and originality, with a theme that will resonate with all of us.
