Crys Matthews gives thanks to the freedom riders in “Call Them In”

Crys Matthews is known for her protest folk anthems which address topics close to her heart. From LGBTQ rights to social justice, the DC based artist uses her voice to send a message and this time it’s to the freedom riders. “Call Them In” is her thank you letter to them, praising them for standing up in times of need and for trying to make the world a better place for all.

“Call Them In” is the second single to be released off of her album, Changemakers. A passionate and powerful blend of infectious Americana melodies and folky instrumentation, Matthews delivers her honest songwriting through a beautifully raw and unfiltered lens. Oozing soul, her voice bleeds with emotion and gratitude, while simple piano melodies and upbeat percussion fill you with appreciation and love for the people around us who fight for change.

“Call Them In” was written after Matthews saw an interview on the Today Show with Congressman John Lewis, who at 80 years old was still urging people to stand up for their rights and for justice. Matthews confides, “At 80 years old, and after having suffered so much cruelty and brutality, this great man was still doing the work of calling out injustice while simultaneously calling in more allies. So when he died on July 17, 2020, I knew that I wanted to honor him. It is my sincere hope that ‘Call Them In’ does just that.”
