Rising South-West London artist dexter just released her latest single “I Like Me.” The alt-pop gem is lifted off her forthcoming debut EP I do love a good sandwich, via creative incubator Common Knowledge, an imprint founded and run by girl in red’s manager.
Boosted by just two guitar chords made on her phone, the 18-year-old artist delivers an ebullient effort that is completely captivating. The song glides so smoothly and effortlessly, it’s the epitome of a breath of fresh air. Arriving somewhere in the bedroom-pop and alt-R&B vicinity, “I Like Me” leans on a saccharine production and infectious melodies. Thematically, the song taps into the embodiment of self-esteem, recognizing your worth, and dismissing beauty standards. On “I Like Me,” dexter juxtaposes jovial sonic tones with observational lyricism signally towards self-love.
“‘I Like Me’ is about me feeling like I have to be a certain way to make boys like me or to feel more ‘like a girl,’ says dexter over email. “I was inspired by a period of time in lockdown where I found myself trying to buy a bunch of clothes that would make me feel more feminine and girly but I didn’t even like half the stuff I was buying. I would like it to let listeners know that girls shouldn’t have to act a certain way to feel like they are still feminine or worthy of people liking them and that it’s cool to be both girly and not girly.”
“I Like Me” follows dexter’s previous 2021 singles “Blue Skies” and “Maybe The Problem is Me.” Both tracks can be found on her I do love a good sandwich EP due out August 4th.
