Writing songs since the age of 16 and only releasing her debut in 2019, North London’s Laurel Smith has been evolving her sound into something quite special. Now, the 19-year-old’s ambitious soundscapes have transformed into a moody aesthetic. Sharing her new action-packed single “Out The Cage”, Smith explores breaking free from the norm and doing whatever the hell you wanna do. And we’re here for it.
Teaming up with Jeremie Brivet and Jai Garcha for the thrilling visuals, “Out The Cage” effuses a menacing dark-pop tone that hooks you instantly. Offering a sleek blend of electro-pop with R&B melodies and woven with cinematic undertones, the “Out The Cage” is a gritty release for a newcomer that ensures her name is firmly placed on the radars of everyone in the know.
“‘Out The Cage’ is a song about breaking out from your constraints, both physical and mental,” Smith explains. “Although it can be interpreted in any way, when I wrote it I created a story around a bored housewife, falling out of love with her husband, she fantasises about tying him up and leaving him to be a badass assassin in a video game type world, roaming the city at night and living a life of unpredictability and excitement.”
Laurel Smith’s innovative art is gripping. “Out The Cage” showcases a badass female artist smashing the mould and expressing her true artistic endeavors with clear-cut boldness. Oh, and someone better sign her pronto.
