Layal explores her Egyptian heritage on “Temporary Highs”

Based in London and immersing herself in the world of Jazz and Neo-Soul, rising songwriter Layal has just dropped her new single “Temporary Highs”. We always look for artists who push the boundaries outside the norms of their genre, and on her new single Layal layers elements of modern soul and hints at her Egyptian heritage throughout.

Last year, she launched her artist project with ‘For The Love of The Cool’ – a traditional piece of neo-soul, but with “Temporary Highs” she’s pushing the boundaries. The track is built around an earworm melody, overlaying a pulsating synth bass. The layers of Egyptian instrumentation blend perfectly to provide a foundation for her lead vocal. Speaking on the inspiration behind the new single, Layal states:

“This song is heavily influenced by my Egyptian roots. It’s inspired by the Me Too movement which took place around the summer of 2020. I wrote this song for women, to tell them that they will not be overshadowed and that the sky’s the limit because they have so much potential. This is also sending the message that people should focus on their own journey rather than judging others. This song is very personal for me as it’s something I always like to bring attention to whether through my conversation or my music so I enjoyed writing this.

The instrumental is inspired by many Egyptian artists and music and it really ties the song together.” – Layal
