LEEPA explores Gen-Z angst on ‘Brain Freeze’ EP

If you haven’t heard of LEEPA, you will need to buckle yourself up as she is on a trajectory to becoming an international sensation, not only for her shattering vocals but as a key figure for fashion, feminism and merciless realism. Her new release Brain Freeze offers a reminder of what it’s like to be young again, with a grunge-pop style throughout which combines with her inspirations to create something refreshing.

LEEPA’s previous releases have drawn up impressive figures and generated a dedicated fanbase worldwide. After a series of EP’s and singles LEEPA has amassed herself over 150,000 dedicated monthly listeners on Spotify and is on a trajectory for success with the release of her refreshing album Brain Freeze. After becoming a viral sensation on Tiktok in the midst of the pandemic, she went on to perform at Climate Live and Fridays for Future, and shared a stage with Milky Chance. Personally, Brain Freeze is a reminder of the 2000’s era of Paramour with a modern and youthful twist inspired by elements of hip-hop, rock and R&B.

Brain Freeze starts with nostalgia infused pop song “Blood”, which is about her issues and fear of being broken apart in a relationship. It’s full of hard-hitting lyrics and distorted, grunge-like production sounds, which add to its feeling of anger and distress within her experiences. This explosive first track is followed by “18”, a contrasting track with its light acoustic guitar, which shows her soft side within a breakup and her self reflection on the situation. Both tracks boast impressive vocal production throughout, and demonstrate why LEEPA is on a path to become the new pop star everyone knows about.  As the EP flows, we see LEEPA explore angsty, pop-punk frustration on tracks such as “i’m sorry, are you” and “second firsts”- showcasing the artists versatility and ability to rebrand older genres with a 2022 edge. The EP is a one of a kind, and brings back youthful memories to most as well as being a motivating energetic sound that’s encouraging and moving.

Brain Freeze is out now Via Columbia Records Germany.
