Ruben Dawnson will “Safely” carry you into summer

The term “bedroom producer” was once a phrase unique to artists that had set up a studio area in what space they had left in their bedrooms, but as technology has progressed and condensed with time, the once uniquely DIY approach and sound has grown with it and shirked its once rough edges. Bedroom pop has now become a purposeful aesthetic, and Norway’s own Ruben Dawnson is a shining example of it, still opting to write, record and produce his chameleonic music in his bedroom dojo based in the cold Norwegian woods.

Ahead of his sophomore EP, Dawson continues to whet appetites with “Safely.” Maintaining the shimmeringly warm aesthetic from his previous and title track of the project, “Sunshower,” he opts to dial back some of the sonic effervescence to compound the love addled lyricism.

Despite the aforementioned, cumbersome lyricism, “Safely” arrives an uplifting, early summer bop, with its balmy tone applied from as soon as you hit play. A syrupy sweet whistle introduces the motif of the track, one so addictive, you’ll be whistling along by its second iteration past the chorus. Dawnson’s pensive vocal delivery, set against the simplistic yet masterfully executed instrumentation displays a stellar talent, holding your attention firmly for close to the first third of the song in the same dynamic atmosphere.

Changing vocal rhythms for the chorus, his voice works in synergistic tandem with the backing melodies and delivering yet another memorable melody. The charming to and fro of the verse, chorus and instrumental passages craft such a pleasant ambience, if the earworm melodies weren’t already deeply rooted in your head from your first listen, they certainly will after you undoubtedly reach for the replay button as “Safely” fades out.
