Indie pop meets synth rock band San Fermin returns with a new riveting video for their single "Nothingness". The track is off of their compilation EP entitled In This House which features a bevy of collaborations with artists/bands including Wye Oak, Nico Muhly, Sorcha Richardson, Wild Pink, Thao Nguyen, Attacca Quartet and The Districts, with whom they teamed up with for "Nothingness".
In "Nothingness", San Fermin and The Districts explore the complexities of relationships – how we sometimes experience unrequited love, how relationships change, and how love can feel temporary – with lyrics, "then you turn back to nothingness. Never meant to hold on." With quirky synths, soulful vocals and dream-filled hazy soundscapes, San Fermin and The Districts have crafted a perfect expressive slow-burned bop. The accompanying animated visualizer was created by Marty McPherson and further highlights the narrative of hanging on to hope for connection and looking for signs that the love is real. The illustrated man is seen spinning around with everyday items reminding him of his partner, who has disconnected from him. In the end, the main character is so far in denial and fantasy that he becomes lost in space, turning into the “nothingness” that he recites in the song.
Brooklyn based San Fermin first released music in 2013 with their self-titled album that garnered critical acclaim. Since then, they have built a loyal following with their unique brand of left-of-center pop infused with existential indie rock. The band has found success opening for St. Vincent, The National, Arctic Monkeys as well as performing at Lollapalooza. “Nothingness” is the final single off of In This House, San Fermin’s EP which was inspired by themes of loss, community, and a sense of what home means.
