The Bombhappies share their first new offering in ten years “Boléro”

Repetition can sometimes be boring and a nine minute track can often be daunting.

Swedish Alternative Folk/Rock band The Bombhappies are here to prove preconceptions wrong with their first single in ten years “Boléro”.

I was first enticed by the sweet opening melodies of this track, accompanied to bird sounds. Animal sounds in an opening instrumental can often be a breeding ground for cringe, but if anything I felt lulled to sleep. A delicate and slightly woozy guitar riff opens up into a laid-back harmonica melody with a soft drum accompaniment before we hear the strums of an acoustic guitar that make way for a nicely stacked vocal line that brings reflection and acceptance.

The premise of this track is an interesting one. The same melody is repeated over and over, in different ways, for nine minutes. The Bombhappies prove that this is far from boring- this is just the way it is. There is an iridescent, classic indie folk sound to this new offering, that becomes more and more encompassing as the melody shifts between chord progressions and adaptations of the instrumentation. We even get some saxophone and electronic feedback that just.. works.

As this song ebbs and flows, so does the listener. Tones of optimism, acceptance and hope are all apparent on this sonic journey and The Bombhappies latest single was certainly worth the wait.
