The alternative pop trio Apricot Ink has dropped the attention-grabbing new single, “Make Believe.” The ethereal sounds emanate right from the moment it starts and draws listeners in with its sublime melodies and dreamy production. On the track, the trio creates an ideal world where the beauty in simple things is magnified and cherished for exactly what they represent. The lyrics are quite relatable and evocative as they explore self-acceptance and basking in the now rather than the unknown.
Made up of three Canberrans— Gus, Sara, and Willo — their love for different genres has formed an alliance that looks weird on paper, but the end result is unmistakably perfectly matched. “Make Believe” for example, lies in the alternative pop department but it still has elements of R&B and to some extent, soul. The bright textures and some parts of the vocal runs are pop-oriented while the drum grooves have a soul feel to them and they even sampled bird sounds to accentuate that ethereal and natural aesthetic
“Make Believe” is the trio’s follow-up to their previous single, “Do You See,” which became a top-five track on the Triple J Unearthed’s DIY Super Group Competition. While the trio has yet to put out a full-length project, they do have some singles like their double debut release “Lucky Rainbow”/”Carmelyzed Crusade”. These songs are a testament to the band’s versatility and unpredictable style as they go in a different direction bridging the worlds of pop and neo-soul, peppered with some hip-hop swag.
