Chicago is home to a thriving underground scene, fraught with absolutely rockin’ bands like Twin Peaks, Lala Lala, and Belmont. The scene is loud, raucous, and driven by distorted guitars. The Bandcamp page of Horsegirl brands themselves as “noise made in Chicago”, the perfect sentiment of a local high-school-aged outfit that might not even fully grasp the level of their talent. Horsegirl is Gigi Reece, Nora Cheng, and Penelope Lowenstein – three high school seniors who are now faced with the decision of college, while being one of the area’s fastest growing groups.
“Sea Life Sandwich Boy” is an eclectic lo-fi rocker that sounds somewhere in-between Snail Mail and Sonic Youth. It starts off with a rolling snare fill and crescendos into a soft shoegaze soup of distorted guitars, droning lyrics and a dark feeling of despair. By the end of it all, you’re caught in a flurry of crashing cymbals, and a deep cut rhythm that would command head-bobbing from the crowd of any underground house show. This song doesn’t just rock; it kicks ass. Their sound is the penultimate garage rock, and a great addition to the Chicago scene. Who knows what the future will hold in store for these women, and let this be a lesson to support your favorite artists while they’re still around. It would be great to hear more from Horsegirl.
