There’s no such thing as an easy ride, just ask Kam DeLa. Coming out of New Jersey, the rising artist has lived a couple lives in the rap game. Starting his career off as one-third of the trio, DEF Bananas, he parlayed that experience into a respectable start to his solo career. After appearing on BET Jams as well as Ebro Darden’s Apple Radio show, he returns to the spotlight with his enjoyable new single, “Summer?”
Produced by Kam himself, “Summer?” is a lyrically engaging record with a relevant theme. Comparing the highs and lows of a relationship to the transition from Summer to Fall, he does a brilliant job of connecting the two examples at every turn. Utilizing his knack for melodic progression to smooth things along, croons about a love gone sour. While this is the case, one of the more intriguing qualities about the song is how, by the end, he reminds the listener to see the beauty in everything, especially the journey. Although it’s a bittersweet acceptance, it’s one that often has to be made.
“Summer?” was inspired by my need to write about my less than traditional relationship life,” Says DeLa. “After a break up that seemed to flow as easily as water, it just felt like it was a natural and almost inevitable situation.” Continuing, he states, “After having a Summer consisting of staying indoors and self isolation, the question mark in the song title suggests the idea that we may have never even had a Summer to begin with.”
