UK reggae favourites KIOKO return with a new lineup and a new direction. Continuing their rich sounds, the band share their new single “Kakaroach”; a reflective track criticising the negative parts of living in British society.
Inspired by the lived experiences of several band members, the single’s themes of racism and anti-semitism within “Kakaroach” takes aim at the undesirable elements of society. Yet, with their vibrant beats and sultry bass grooves, the reggae outfit promise to uplift listeners with their traditional melodies and evocative lyricism. “In the wake of cyber racism, anti-semitism and racial injustices across the world, the song was written to tell people the way we see it and to inform the people who believe racism doesn’t exist,” explains Lozza T. “There are many people out there that don’t believe that your face or institutional racism is a thing.”
While “Kakaroach” places itself as a protest song, the boys in KIOKO continue to raise awareness of issues with style. While reggae shall always continue to thrive across the world with its relaxed beats and groovy instrumenation, the power of the genre lies with those who remain to keep it alive. KIOKO are a band who wear their hearts and their politics on their sleeves and “Kararoach” remains to be a beacon of light within a society that is adamant to revel in inequality.
