Nashville-based producer, songwriter, and singer Rutherford Royal has just unveiled his debut single and it is a contemplative narrative on one-sided love. Called “Back Burner”, the track is the first single off of his upcoming EP set for release later this year.
With “Back Burner”, Rutherford Royal shares the tale of unrequited love specifically with the account of a boy waiting endlessly for a girl he loves to come to him despite her constantly going through several other meaningless flings. The destructive yearning can be a terrible waste of time but sometimes we need closure in order to move on. Lyrics including, “I’ve been waiting for you to come around / It’s been a long time lady since we have had something to talk about / But if you put me on the backburner just don’t forget about me / I’ll simmer until I die,” show him pleading with his interest to keep him in mind when he realizes he should be moving on. “Back Burner” is a slow burned indie rock tune full of ghost town infused guitar riffs, groove induced basslines and reflective soul-drenched vocals. The devastatingly relatable narrative is told through a decadent sonic offering full of blues guitar riffs, Americana-influenced melodies and moody harmonies.
Rutherford Royal is South Carolina-born and bred multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Andrew Christopher Rutherford Royal. Now based in Tennessee, he is also known as one half of funk pop duo Poster Child and can be often found mixing and recording other artist’s works in his remote cabin studio. Take a listen to “Back Burner” now and remember don’t wait around forever for unreachable love.
