Self-described ‘Lo-Fi Soul’ music Canadian duo Sargeant X Comrade returns with the visual for their thought-provoking single “Empire.” The politically-charged song is inspired by Sister Nancy’s classic song as the duo repurpose the melody with their unique twist. Led by frontwoman Yolanda Sargeant who delivers a patois-infused performance peppered with reflective lyrics that dive into the recent state of affairs. From the global political and societal unrest, protests, and more, Yolanda reminds us that there is nothing new under the sun as history keeps repeating itself. The production used here is as eclectic as they come and uses a wobbly synth, sparse drum grooves, and experimental sound design to complete the job.
The visual aesthetic is dark and grainy as it follows the works of an anonymous hacker group broadcasting an overload of information/computer codes to the world from their secret base. The retro-futuristic shot is reminiscent of the early 90s sci-fi flicks and the result is a distinguished style and unique look that strays from the norm.
“Empire” is a video art piece for the 3rd single from the Sargeant X Comrade album The Elephant In The Room, released on Mogravy Records.
