Lisbon’s Violet has returned to her own label, Naive, to release a new six-track EP. Her first solo EP on the label since Togetherness, Violet recruits the celestial Eris Drew on remix duties — the cherry on the cake if ever there was one.
Espírito explores the realms of leftfield techno and tribal house, with the title track leaping right into the deep end. It leaves us with a track entirely reminiscent of that turning point in the night. You know, the part where everyone’s out of it, things are starting to get a little strange, and you’re completely hooked on hypnotic rhythms. Five minutes of heavy-duty drum workouts and cowbell tinges, “Espírito” captures the mood of the EP before we’ve even gotten any further. “After Forever” continues with a similar tone; peppered with ever-so-slightly menacing drones, the drums hit even harder juxtaposed against them. It’s sweaty warehouse music, refined and repackaged with that special Violet touch.
The B-side is where things start to get really interesting. “Psyche” flips the EP on its head, opting for off-kilter breaks and acidic tinges. It may be somewhat more unsettled and chaotic, but it remains the heaviest hitter on the release nonetheless. Euphoric and erratic in equal measures, it’s a track that has us dreaming of intimate rave moments. The EP is rounded off with a killer remix from the Motherbeat founder herself, Eris Drew. Every bit as otherworldly and psychedelic as one would expect, it really is a match made in heaven.
