Brooklyn’s Joey Bada$$ has shared a new visual for his single “Where I Belong”. Produced by Statik Selektah, this release follows “THE REV3NGE” and “Head High” as the third single from his upcoming album 2000. Marking another lyrically-focused, gritty offering from the New York rapper, “Where I Belong” has been paired with an engagingly retro visual directed by Waqas Ghani that finds him returning to his roots in Flatbush.
“Where I Belong” possesses a classic boom-bap sound with a refreshing twist. Grimy, driving percussion creates a cathartic rhythm as creeping keys and graceful strings drift overtop, contrasting with the powerful rhythm section intriguingly. Bada$$’ commanding delivery matches the beat’s raw feel, as he laces the track with evocative lines detailing growing up in Brookyln and rising to the status of a rap star.
The accompanying visual, directed by Waqas Ghani, brings the viewer back to Joey’s home of Flatbush, New York, as well as other notable NYC spots, and utilizes a video cassette look to enhance the track’s retro sound. Engaging in its stripped back style, both the video and single neatly capture the atmosphere of New York City.
The latest from Joey Bada$$, “Where I Belong” will appear on his upcoming album 2000, which was set to release in June but due to sample clearance issues has now been pushed back to a July release date.
