Utah musician Buppy has shared a new visual for his song “Open My Letter”.
17 year-old singer Buppy has been gaining momentum quickly of late, earning a dedicated fanbase through his emotive, genre-blending style. Working out of Los Angeles in a bedroom studio, he crafted a smooth, relatable debut single in 2021’s “Violence”. Influenced by R&B, indie pop, and hip-hop, his unique sound is diverse and refreshing. Through music, he hopes to inspire other teenagers by dissecting the struggles they face- such as social stress and mental health.
For “Open My Letter”, his sophomore single, Buppy brings forth a melancholic, minimalistic offering. The song is stripped back, featuring raw acoustic guitars and wistful synths. His vocal performance is bittersweet, containing heartbroken melodies. The vocals build throughout the song, until they climax in an intensely heavy-hearted chorus. Topically, he reflects on a troubling, complex relationship that has left him in a state of emotional confusion.
The visual for “Open My Letter” is elegant and nostalgic. Shot by Anthony Palmer, it shows Buppy travelling along the California coast, spending time isolated in nature. The video utilizes beautiful landscape shots and muted lighting to conjure a feeling of bittersweet longing. Moreover, this reflects the mood of the song, matching the it’s maudlin sound.
Overall, “Open My Letter” is a strong offering from a young, up-and-coming act. Considering the fact that this is only Buppy’s second single, he shows a lot of promise. It seems very likely that this will be a breakout year for the teenage artist.
