Dan Lipton’s “Mix Tapes” is a road trip worth taking

If you need some laid-back, folksy tunes to fuel your (likely imaginary) pandemic road trip, Dan Lipton is your guy. A singer-songwriter based in DC, Lipton’s latest single, “Mix Tapes,” hearkens back to the all-too-familiar pastime of packing up a Volvo on its last legs and journeying wherever the wind takes you.

“Mix Tapes” is the lead single off Lipton’s sophomore LP Water Rising. Like the rest of the project, “Mix Tapes” was tracked in the cramped quarters of his attic, accentuating the track’s homey, unfiltered vibe. Lipton relates to listeners from the jump, recalling fond memories from his life “before the working wage” when he’d load up a car that was “no Mercedes Benz” and head to the mountains on a whim. It’s hard not to get lost in the song’s steady beat, Lipton’s finger-picked guitar and his reminiscing about serendipitous road-tripping while one foot hangs out the passenger side window. Indeed, the “highway lights look like a runway,” and I can’t wait to walk that catwalk again soon.

Water Rising is available to stream and purchase via the links below. Give “Mix Tapes” a spin and peep out the rest of the LP for more delightful ditties from Dan Lipton.
