The music of Chicago-based group, Moontype, is the music of wallflowers. Their sound is dreamy, shoegazey, and uplifts the space it fills without imposing itself. The trio (singer/bassist Margaret McCarthy, guitarist Ben Cruz and drummer Emerson Hunton) met each other at Oberlin College, before moving to Chicago and getting signed to Born Yesterday Records. Their debut single “Ferry” comes with a warm and dynamic music video.
In an interview with the FADER, McCarthy says about “Ferry”, “I wanna take the ferry to Michigan! Get me out of this place!” This track is a soundtrack to the Midwest, and the feeling of yearning. It’s soft-spoken, with subtle guitars that explode into a flurry at the chorus, with the help of a steady crash of cymbals; this three-piece has no trouble bringing the noise. Moontype’s sound is a refined version of what’d you’d find in your college town basement shows. The energy is fresh, reflective, and unfiltered. Whether walking through an Ohio field, or Lake Michigan dunes, this song is the essence of looking out just past the horizon.
Their debut album, Bodies of Water is out in 2021 via Born Yesterday Records.
