Based in Berlin and creating some of the best new pop music coming out of the region, rising pop sensation LEEPA takes a reflective tone on her new single “18”. Her previous work has been full of energy and raw, Gen Z angst but the new single sees the songwriter draw on her vulnerability with s tripped back acoustic guitar-based composition.
The piece seems to start with a touch of indie-folk, but as the chorus builds we hear the rising songwriter take the track down an avenue that draws on bug, pop choruses. It’s a gorgeous vehicle for LEEPA’s vocals which reminisce about a life before the pandemic, where freedom and innocence were less precious commodities. Speaking on the inspiration behind the track LEEPA shares, “18 is about looking back on your past self and life not in a resentful but rather in a compassionate way.” She continues, “Reflecting on mistakes that were made and how they could’ve been less deep cutting and traumatising if you had held your own hand through it. It’s also about forgiving yourself for not having done it.”
