Montreal singer Dominique Fils-Aimé delivers a nostalgic single “While We Wait” to help start this week on a bright note.
“While We Wait” draws inspiration from the doo-wop era with its stripped-down production and emphasis on layered vocal harmonies and catchy melodies. Dominique’s old soul approach is beyond just the aesthetics as she also draws inspiration from the social and political aura of that era. Her sole purpose is to bridge the gap using the sensibilities of the past to reflect on where we are now. The overall mood sure is lighthearted but in between, she pricks the mind with lines like “I got some real questions to ask you how do we change the world/ one move at a time.” The track is as dynamic as they come thanks to musical arranger Jacques Roy’s lush textures and use of cinematic progressions that reach a climax towards the second half of the song.
Debuting in 2018, she and has 2 full-length projects under her belt already with her second LP winning the 2020 JUNO Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. This is quite impressive but it seems she is not resting on her oars as she prepares to give the listeners new material in the coming months. Stylistically she taps into the spirit of soul icons of the 1940s and 1960s such as Billie Holiday, Etta James, and Nina Simone to bring forth a refreshing take on blues, soul/jazz genres.
