Idris Lawal’s “Wallflowers” is a somber look through the vista of Black experience

Idris Lawal follows up Young, Black & Blue EP with a new single “Wallflowers.”  The track sees him working with longtime collaborator Antion alongside singer Rocsi and Saxophonist, Jelani Watson. Lawal goes for a pop-infused sound this time around with bouncy four to the floor drums, jazzy textures, and most importantly a message that speaks to the Black youth. Armed with his off-beat vocal style the Toronto-based act pours his emotions on wax as he reflects on the lives caught short by senseless police brutality.

His approach is quite honest and somewhat balanced as he strays from the obvious a bit. The track gives the listener both sides of the same coin. He aims to spark the conversation of how policymakers and the system are not doing much to make things better while also celebrating the lives of those who were caught in the crossfire. “Wallflowers” was also inspired by his own childhood experiences growing up under the watchful eyes of his mother and the fear of the unknown if he steps outside the house.

“Wallflowers” seems to be a one-off record for Lawal and not attached to any project for now. Get it on all DSPs here.
