Following her recent EP Drug Music, rising alternative R&B and neo-soul artist Magi Merlin releases new single “To The Beach”, the latest from her forthcoming project Weather Music.
The full collection of tracks will arrive as a deconstructed album, with each release representing a different season. The Montréal-based artist’s “To The Beach” symbolises spring, which for her marks a time of growth, change and catharsis. Underpinned by hazy pads, Merlin’s hypnotic vocals softly soar as she explores themes surrounding her own racial identity, love, and personal growth.
Speaking on her intimate and vulnerable lyric’s Merlin explains, “I tend to overshare through my music, I use it as a tool to process the more important moments in my life. ‘To The Beach’ is the perfect example of that creative process. I’ve always had a difficult relationship with my father. I wrote this song after deciding I no longer wanted to speak with him. This track allowed me to sing my way to catharsis.”
Encapsulating a diverse soundscape that takes influences from Childish Gambino and SZA to Radiohead’s In Rainbows, Hyukoh‘s 23, and Tim Maia‘s World Psychedelic Classics, Vol. 4, Merlin pieces them together to create her own distinct sound of warm R&B and soul layered with experimental electronica.
