LA-based, Midwest-bred rapper Max Wells recounts his life experiences and then some on his latest single “Beside Myself.” The new record catches the young man in full introspective mode with mixed emotions over a moody booming backdrop.
Wells gives listeners a short overview of his life, from losing friends, death, and making life-changing decisions as a young artist. “Beside Myself” makes use of a silky melodic flow to tell Wells’ personal journey. Wells sounds right at home over the solemn textures and hard trap grooves but doesn’t let it distract listeners from the message being conveyed. His use of minimalistic melodies helps open up the room for his easy-flowing vocal performance to deliver honest lyricism.
The accompanying music video for “Beside Myself” features a moody psychedelic feel that helps capture the artist’s state of mind as we see him travel through various locations. Regardless, the entire visual feels calm and plays well into Wells’ emotionally raw performance and aspirational lyrics such as “They tell me it’s part of the process, I am what I am, I guess.”
