In this unprecedented era in 2020, Simon Jefferis‘ laid back, effortlessly stylish music provides a welcome break from our collective anxiety, offering a soothing reminder of the normalcy we crave. The Brixton beat maker’s bumping new track “Back 2 Ours” shows off his superb skills and tasteful blend of elements from hip-hop and jazz with help from Austin MC Abhi the Nomad and London artist David Mrakpor on vibraphone. The single is taken from Jefferis’ forthcoming album due out later this year on DeepMatter.
Without sacrificing any originality, “Back 2 Ours” delivers a sense of nostalgia with its boom bap feel and Abhi’s fearless rapping style and references to golden era giants like Black Thought and Phife Dawg. Musically, Jefferis cultivates a crisp beat with catchy melodies and slick swing sections throughout. Mrakpor makes his presence felt in the song’s melodic hook and then again with a dexterous solo in the latter part of the track.
