Over the last half decade or so, we’ve seen certain elements of punk music and hip-hop mesh together to form one of the more intriguing sub-genres around today in Emo Rap. Spawning popular artists like Juice WRLD, Lil’ Peep, Lil’ Tracy, Trippie Redd and more, the controversial sub-genre has provided an outlet for many up and coming artists to wear their emotions on their sleeves, and not feel like an outcast for it. One of those artists is South Carolina rapper Yung Meme, who checks into our pages for the first time with his grungy new single, “Amethyst.”
Produced by TyG2X, “Amethyst,” is an emotionally driven record that finds Yung Meme holding nothing back, lyrically. “She picked up my heart and threw it in a trashcan/ That’s how these things go,” croons Yung Meme on the hook, essentially setting the tone for the rest of the record. Utilizing a raspy, yet infectious vocal tone, the South Carolina native meshes perfectly with the grunge production from TyG2X, as the duo establish a clear connection. Combining these elements with his eclectic personality and fashion sense, it’s possible that Yung Meme could be a household name sooner than later.
