Swiss-Canadian debutant Alicia Clara, champions lo-fi, ’80s-via-’90s-themed nostalgia on her first offering, “Closing Time at the Gates.”
A dusty soft synth opens “Closing Time at the Gates,” granting acres of space for the first taste of her distinctive voice; a perfect harmony of syrupy sweet and lackadaisically icy. An expertly executed moment of silence firmly grabs your attention before the chorus unfurls into a neon-tinged, borderline gloomy synth-pop ballad. Compounding the nostalgia, the visual applies a multitude of antiquated visual trappings which overall, crafts something that truly feels out of place in time.
