15 year old singer/songwriter AVIV captures coming of age narratives in sugary sweet indie pop releases. Her latest single "Failed English" is both uptempo and breezy, innocent yet self aware.
In "Failed English", the Toronto based teen explores the deep seated distasteful feelings that can arise after a bad breakup. Even though these negative feelings often dominate, AVIV also highlights the mixed feelings that can occur including missing one's ex and hoping them the best. She confides, "the song explores the somewhat nasty feelings which erupted following a breakup and demonization of the individual who broke up with you as a defence mechanism. In the production, I wanted to complement the negativity and aggressiveness of the text with sweet and upbeat sounds to stress the incongruity of the narrative—detesting your ex while missing them." With bouncy bass, colorful synths, and AVIV's signature sing-a-long melodies, "Failed English" is a timeless narrative of confusion and emotional turpulence packaged in a light hearted and irresistible musical affair.
AVIV grew up exploring record stores with her large family. Influenced by the classics such as Fleetwood Mac and modern day artists Radiohead, Lorde and Lana Del Rey, a young AVIV began learning the piano and guitar, soon crafting her own songs all about growing up.
