GOATs come together with lyrical excellence on Russ’ ‘Chomp 2’

The multitalented Russ shows off his versatility again upon the release of his new album CHOMP 2. Filled with high-level bars and intricate wordplay, we witness Russ, the independent GOAT, create an album with other GOATs (the OGs), killing it both on the mic and on the production.

CHOMP 2 includes all of these artists/producers: RansomPapooseThe GameWestside GunnStyles PJadakissBig K.R.I.T.SnoopJay ElectronicaBig SeanWaleJoey Bada$$ConwayGhostfaceCyHi, Lloyd BanksMozzy + Jake OneMr. PorterHi-Tek9th WonderDJ PremierHarry FraudHit-BoyThe AlchemistStatik SelektahBink!, and Boi-1da. Bringing all of these creatives together through collaboration shows how elevated Russ’ vision is as he demonstrates appreciation to the foundation of hip-hop while building on it with his own modern twist. It delivers nothing less than perfection.

Starting off the album with “Sheep,” Russ uses clever lyricism to address a few societal issues while explaining his success, stressing how he stands out because he follows his path. He spits, “This industry is high school/ Grown men and women acting like they’re still in 10th grade/ I don’t care what your friends say, I’m legendary.” This is one example of how the powerful wordplay in this track is mind-blowing, as he pieces rhymes together that have us all deeply thinking. These witty words over an intriguing production, including a heavy bass, drums, and the boom bap sounds, creates the perfect blend.

Being a game of competition, it is difficult to know who beat who on what track, especially since every single artist brings genius-level bars to the table. On “Blue Chip,” Ransom brings exemplary bars to the table, feeding those who have a deep love for lyricism. This New Jersey rapper incorporates witty metaphors and rhymes over boom bap sounds, claps, and chimes on the production. Transitioning to “Bucket Hat Low,” Papoose brought Brooklyn in the house, spewing quick, lively rhymes with an impeccable flow all over church-like production with a choir in the background. On the fifth track, “Salute,” Styles P and Westside Gunn also bless this track with heavy lyricism, delivering bars that elevate your spirit. On “Top of the World,” Jay Electronica uses brilliant metaphors that intertwine God in every lyric, creating a euphoric feeling.
In the midst of all of these tracks, Russ undeniably carries his weight, both lyricially and through his soothing singing voice, effortlessly weaving his presence through every single track. Press play and experience greatness on different levels.
