British Electronic duo Head Ballet have just dropped their debut EP Suddenly It’s Making Sense alongside their new single “Beachgrass”.
Songwriters Kiera Court and Danny Casio started collaborating sonically when they accidentally ended up living together during the pandemic. Luckily they bonded over mutual musical influences to create what is now Head Ballet.
The EP is simply stunning. Opening up with new single “Beachgrass,” the duo fuse catchy Alt-Pop sensibilities with Dream Pop and Bedroom Pop influences. Celestial in nature and grounded in the way it takes a hold of the listener, floor-filling soundscapes are lifted up to ethereal levels to create something grippingly unique yet warming and familiar.
The duo capture the elevated highs and dramatic lows of relationships and the complex emotions of discovering yourself throughout the EP.
Head Ballet describes the EP as a collection of music that was made at a time where they were incredibly isolated, like everyone else, in the world. They see it as a diary entry that documents a moment in time full of firsts: first love, first break-up and first-breakdown. Each song takes one experience and elevates it – experimenting with sounds and vocals on each track to make them uniquely individual songs but fit when combined together to tell a coming of age story.
The EP brings nostalgia, with iridescent classic Pop toplines meeting the Electronic sensibilities of the new wave of Pop artists who are rising through the ranks. A midway interlude teases motifs that are yet to come, building up atmospheric sounds with muffled nods to the songs following before the bouncing synth bass of ‘Eraser’ drops- a bold and beautiful juxtaposition to Kiera’s light and breathy vocals.
An addition of lamenting guitar in final track “To Know Yours” has a tinge of 2000’s angst, as if it’s opening up an Alt-Rock anthem, but we’re soon grounded by vocals stacks that assure us that this is another Alt-Pop winner. Head Ballet leaves in a wave of fuzz and distortion, counteracting the sunny disposition of their opening track.
