The Shadowboxers share “More Than A Woman” (Bee Gees Cover)

The three-man pop group The Shadowboxers, have had a long stint working their craft. From their humble beginnings as a backing band for the Indigo Girls to most recently working and touring alongside mentor Justin Timberlake, the group has found their voice and style. Their latest venture is an absolutely wonderful cover of “More Than A Woman”  by the legendary Bee Gees. I wasn’t quite sure of what to expect but these guys really blew my mind with the way they reimagined the classic song.

I would admit that the original is not something I am too familiar with so I had to do some digging to compare and contrast both tracks. The Bee Gees version is a classic pop/disco jam rife with their characteristic falsetto, layered melody, and that unforgettable ’70s groove. The question is how do you cover this without being too cliche or mundane? The Shadowboxers however provided that answer in an effortless manner. From the pulsating stripped-down production made up of nostalgic textures and highly percussion-driven groove. For one, I like that they discarded the four-to-the-floor rhythm and make use of smooth congas to keep the classic bounce (think The Jackson 5‘s “That’s What You Get (For Being Polite)”). The cover rises to the occasion and lives up to the hype that I’m giving it. From the soaring melodic runs to soothing falsetto vocals the trio cross all the T’s and without a single shred of doubt killed this rendition.

Sonically it blends the old with the new and sure is more than a brilliant addition to your playlist. The Shadowboxers are made up of the trio of Scott Tyler, Matt Lipkins, and Adam Hoffman.
